Story of ‘Daivani’ -The Oldest Tea Plucker

Her name is M. Daivani.
She was born in India on 15th November 1915 (as she vaguely remembers) and transported to Ceylon by the British to work on their first tea plantations when she was 4 years old. She worked in Spring Valley Estate, Badulla, and still lives there to this day.
“I was born in a village called “Keeramangalam’’. I left India with my parents at the age of 4. They have since returned.
‘I recall that we stayed in a couple of places for about 2-3 years. After that, we moved from estate to estate.’ ඇය නමින්, එම්.දෛයීවානී ය.(M.Daivanai) 1915 නොවැම්බර් 15 වෙනිදා,(ඇයට මතක ලෙස) ඉන්දියාවේ උපත ලද ඇය ශ්‍රී ලංකාව නම් දූපතේ ‘තේ‘ වගාව සාරවත් කර ගැනීම සදහා එවක ලංකාව පාලනය කල බ්‍රිතාන්‍යන් විසින්, ඉන්දියාවේ සිට ගෙන ආවේ අවුරුදු 4 දී.එම්.දෛයීවානී,(M.Daivanai) වැඩකලේ, ජීවත් වූයේ, තවමත් ජීවත් වන්නේ බදුල්ල, සප්‍රිංවැලි වතු යායේ .
මම ඉපදුනේ ඉන්දියාවේ ‘කීරමංගලම්’ කියන ගමේ.මම ඉන්දියාවේ ඉදලා ආවේ වයස අවුරුදු 4 දි, අම්මයි තාත්තයි තමයි මාව ලංකාවට එක්කං ආවේ. ඊට පස්සේ අම්මලා තාත්තලා මාව මෙහෙ දාලා එයාලා ඔක්කෝම ඉන්දියාවට ගියා’’
ඉන්දියාවේ ඉදලා එනකොට අතර මග අවුරුදු දෙක තුනක් හිටියා මතකයි. ඊට පස්සේ අපි වතු ගානේ ඇවිද්දා…

“ When I was 8, I was registered in the ‘’Koonapalei’’ and sent to harvest tea on the estate with a basket hanging on my back. I could not manage by myself as I was too little, so my elder sisters had to help me.They are the ones who measured the weight of the tea leaves I plucked, before I grew accustomed to it.
මට අවුරුදු 8දී කෝනපෙලෙයි වල මගේ නම ලියාපදිංචි කරලා තේ කූඬේ පිටේ එල්ලගන වත්තේ වැඩට ගියා…ඒක මට උස්සගන්න බැහැ මම පොඩි නිසා මට උදව් කරනවා අක්කලා….. අක්කලා තමයි මට දලූ ගොඩගහලා කිරලා දෙන්නේ….ඊට පස්සේ මම ටිකෙන් ටික දලූ කඩන්න එකතු කරන්න පුරුදු උනා..

In those days if we did not pluck enough leaves, the kangani would beat our palm. Still, we would continue to pluck while weeping. Sometimes, we were not even tall enough to pluck the tea leaves, but we had to manage.” ඒ කාලේ දලූ කැඩුවේ නැත්තං කන්කානි මහත්තයා අත දිගහරින්න කියලා අතට ගහනවා.. ඒ ගුටි කාලා අඩ අඩා තේ දලූ කඩනවා. සමහර වෙලාවට අපි උසත් නෑ, තේ දලූ කඩන්න. අපි කොහොම හරි කඩනවා..
