About Unframed

Calling Sri Lanka the ‘teardrop of the Indian Ocean’ instead of the pearl would be more befitting as its history is laden with pain and horror. Everyday the people in this country are pushed to the brink of tears.

This land is wet with the blood of thousands of courageous people who fought for rights and justice for all. Some ‘disappeared’. Others were attacked in public, forced to silence the voices they raised for justice. The blanket term ‘national security’ can deprive someone of every hard-earned asset in their lifetime. In the blink of an eye, it has deprived people of familial love, community and even the homes they have lived in for generations.

At times visible, at times intangible, what shapes everything that happens in Sri Lanka is the ever-present spectre that is the military. Along with this force are the numerous development projects, each of which hide injustice under a blanket of attractive promises.

One point is clear; if one were to look at the island’s history on a continuum, the messengers of justice and equality have been threatened, killed or psychologically broken. Should we turn our backs on their message?

Justice through a camera lens

It has been 8 years since the guns fell silent after nearly three decades of war. Where life and livelihoods have withered away, the demand of the country’s people has been for justice.

Capturing justice through a camera lens is a challenging task. The South of Sri Lanka has its own interpretations of the word, and therefore communicating justice to them has proved to be a challenge. We are all responsible for working together to improve the lives of those whose past holds violence and trauma.

Questions may be raised on whether justice can or cannot be achieved through photos and pictures, but it cannot be denied that these are helpful in outlining the nature of the struggle for justice. We cannot escape from a photo that captures and confronts us with our own flaws and inaction. The photo is an instrument to remind and question the collective accountability of communities in order to avoid violence and terror in the country.

Our plea to you now is to stand with those who fight for justice, in commitment to those who wait for answers and solutions. That we will not be silenced until the victory is won, until we can hear the gospel of justice and love ring true.
